When to Fly In for Your Cruise

The day-before rule, and how to plan the flight home.

The question every cruiser asks: can I fly in the same morning? You can — and on a good day it works. But airlines cancel and delay flights every day, and the ship has hundreds or thousands of other guests to sail with. The day-before rule exists because it turns a potential disaster into a minor inconvenience.

A Simple Timing Guide

Flying Home

Disembarkation day is busy: guests leave the ship in groups over several hours, then clear immigration and customs where required, collect bags and travel to the airport. Book a homebound flight that leaves plenty of slack — a late-morning flight can feel very tight if your group is called late or the ship is delayed by weather or port traffic.

If you must catch an early flight, ask about carrying your own luggage off the ship and leaving in the first group, and ask whether your cruise line sells a transfer timed to flights.

The terminal and the airport may be close, but disembarkation itself takes time.

Making the Night Before Part of the Vacation

  • Choose a hotel near the port or in an interesting neighborhood, and make a mini-break of it.
  • Ask the hotel about cruise shuttles and luggage storage.
  • Keep medicines, documents and a change of clothes in your carry-on in case a checked bag goes astray.
  • Driving rather than flying? Leaving the car near the port is covered on Free Cruise Parking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days before an international cruise should I fly?

At least one full day; many cruisers allow two to recover from jet lag and to absorb any delay. Long-haul flights have fewer daily alternatives if something goes wrong.

What time should my flight home be on disembarkation day?

Leave generous time. Guests leave the ship over several hours, then face immigration, luggage collection and the drive to the airport. Midday or afternoon departures are more comfortable than early-morning ones.
