Booking Your Own Flights to a Cruise
Miles, status and your favorite airline — with the safety margin built back in.
Quote My Cruise and FlightsPlenty of cruisers buy their own flights — to use airline miles, keep elite status benefits, pick a favorite carrier or simply choose better times. It works well, as long as you build in the safety margin the cruise line would otherwise give you.
The Self-Booker’s Rules
Arrive early
Land the day before you sail — earlier for overseas departures or in winter weather season.
Choose nonstop when you can
Every connection is another chance to miss a bag or a flight.
Pick flexible fares
If the cruise changes or you need to fly a day sooner, a changeable fare costs less to fix.
Insure the trip
Travel insurance with trip-interruption and missed-connection cover helps fill the gap a cruise line program might cover.
Advantages and Trade-Offs
| Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|
| Use miles and points | You handle any delay yourself |
| Choose airline, route and times | Catching the ship at the next port is at your expense |
| Keep airline status perks | Two separate bookings to manage |
| Easy seat selection | No automatic link between the ship and the flight |

Searching Smart
- Search the right airports. Big homeport cities often have more than one airport within reach of the terminal.
- Price the whole trip. Bags, seats and change fees can erase a lower fare.
- Avoid the last flight of the day. If it is cancelled, you may not get out until tomorrow.
- Book the return with room to spare. See when to fly in and out.
- Watch for schedule changes. Airlines change times months in advance; check your booking periodically.

Connections: How Much Time Is Enough?
Airlines sell connections with minimum connection times that work on a good day. On a cruise trip, a missed connection can mean a missed ship, so give yourself more slack than the minimum, especially when you change terminals, clear immigration or connect through a hub known for weather delays. If you must connect, choose an early first flight so that a missed connection still leaves later options the same day.
- Keep both flights on one ticket so the airline is responsible for rebooking you.
- Avoid separate tickets with tight connections; a delay on the first leaves you unprotected on the second.
- Check bags through to your final airport and keep essentials in your carry-on.
